November is When the Magic Really Begins!

To many people, November is just that month sandwiched between the excitement of Halloween and Christmas.   That’s not the case in Somerset.  In this county, it’s our much-loved Carnival time of year!

It can be very tricky to convey to someone from outside the county just how important (and dazzling) Somerset carnivals are. We would describe as a bit like a night-time theatre on wheels (and on foot!). It’s a spectacular riot of music, lights and colour. There are around 30 illuminated carnivals in the South West, but the biggest and most famous are the Guy Fawkes carnivals. This ‘circuit’ begins on 4th November this year in Bridgwater. Tens of thousands of people line the streets to watch these very special  carnivals. People visit from far and wide, even from the other side of the world.  It’s a great opportunity to come and visit for a weekend or longer and experience one for yourself!  Check out our special blog about Somerset Carnival Fever for more info.

As well as carnival, we begin the truly exciting build-up to Christmas.  There are some pretty magical Christmas markets.    Exeter Cathedral Christmas Market (from 17th) is set in the grounds of the historical cathedral.   Bath Christmas market (from 23rd Nov) has a stunning location by the ancient Bath Abbey.  The most popular local events include Illuminate at Hestercombe (from 23rd). This transports you on a magical journey of colour, light and sound to bring festive awe to their beautiful gardens.   Children will be enchanted by Winterlights on the West Somerset Railway (24th/25th). An illuminated train awaits, ready to take you on an unforgettable winter journey. Travel along the enchanted track, through woodlands and countryside transformed for the season.  Aside from these most popular atttractions, there’s even more to enjoy., It’s the start of the National Hunt Horseracing fixtures at Taunton Racecourse this month.  There’s also a packed programme at the Brewhouse Theatre in Taunton, with something to suit all tastes.

If your idea of a break is more relaxing, perhaps a stroll to the local village pub ? Or just being cosy in front of a roaring log burner after a bracing walk in the beautiful Somerset countryside?.  Whatever you prefer, we’ve got a property to suit your needs this November.
