The Magic of Steam…. Somerset Style!

What could be better than a day out traveling along the West Somerset Railway (WSR)?  It delights all ages from tiny toddlers to Granny and Grandad ….a real jewel in Somerset’s crown! At 22.75 miles long, the longest standard gauge independent heritage railway in the UK, it really is the perfect family day out.

Those of us old enough to remember the original steam and diesel engines, will revel in the nostalgia. Children of all ages can soak up the atmosphere of real train noises, scents, and action.

WSR runs Steam and Diesel locomotives regularly from May until November, with most services being hauled by great Locomotives. Dogs are welcome on all trains for a small charge, and they are welcome at the stations too. Throughout the year there are Steam Galas and Santa’s Specials in December. There’s also a variety of catering specials throughout the season such as Murder Mysteries, Fish & Chip Specials and Cheese and Cider Specials.

The WSR passes through 10 delightfully unique stations, each with their own charm. Get on and off wherever you like, go all the way from Bishops Lydeard to Minehead or just enjoy a few stops. There are walks, beaches, a harbour, museums, a castle, and a mill – plenty of choice to suit everyone. The scenery is varied with the gently rolling Quantock hills and Exmoor in the distance, unspoilt villages and farms nestling in leafy lanes and the cliffs and coast of the Bristol Channel with views of South-Wales across the water.

We look forward to seeing you onboard!
